I spent yesterday evening curled up on the sofa with my late grandmother’s recipe book collection. It was wonderful.

I was transported back into a different era where values and the role of the housewife were so different from now.  Supermarkets didn’t exist.  The meat came with eyes and skin on.  There were fascinating recipe plans by season from the 1940’s; Ministry of Food Christmas recipes from a lean post-war Britain; everything you would want to cook with dried eggs.  I love the way the books fall open at the recipes which were most used - things that I remember eating when visiting.

My grandmother was famous for her welcoming hospitality and if just a little of that could rub off on me it would be the most precious inheritance I could wish for.
