What do children want in church?

From my blog statistics I find it fascinating the number of people who are asking the above question in search engines and stumbling across my blog because I asked it in a previous post.

So I feel a responsibility to offer my opinion on what the answer is. Here goes in no particular order.

1. Young people want to have fun.

2. They want to find something relevant to them.

3. They don’t want to be bored.

4. They want to find other people of a similar age.

5. They want to be accepted as they are.

6. They want to be challenged.

7. They want their opinion to count.

8. They want to be listened to.

9. They want to be able to express themselves using appropriate up-to-date media.

10. They want to have choice.

Any more ideas??

I’ve just been reading this blog(for the first time, I regret to say)and I wonder if amyone is interested in a survey the Church of Scotland did a couple of years ago - they asked the children what kind of church they would want to see in ten or twenty years when they will be the adults asking the same questions! If you’d like to see the resulting summary of their responses please click the link to “The Children Dream” in my home page. Enjoy!

Sorry - just found your blog so multiple comments. What makes you think adults want anything different from this list? Hence the problem - old people want to find people of their own age (not “running about children”), younger adults don’t want to be bored (with “kids stuff”), middle aged people want what’s appropriate media for them. Its a balancing act - you can’t please all of the people all of the time - and that includes children.
